On each of these outdoor story walks, James will lead you around a series of historic and natural landmarks. You’ll hear the stories that James has collected on his journey through the area: reflecting on how the area has changed with time, as well as how it has changed less than some might think. All the while, you’ll thoroughly explore the local landscape that has preserved these stories across generations. Local stories and quality nature time: a recipe for a transformational day out.
As well as hearing stories, there’ll be opportunity for discussion about what it means to be from Essex, and the optional chance to share stories of your own - all adding to the rich tapestry of life that makes the area unique and special.
Each story walk will be different: different landscapes, different stories. Feel free to come along to both!
About the organiser
James is an Essex-born storyteller and adventurer, who loves nothing more than telling stories to help people engage with the Great British outdoors. In April 2025 he will undertake ‘The Essex Ways’: a storytelling project to gather, preserve and celebrate stories from his home county.
The project, supported by the Essex County Council Art & Cultural Fund 2025, will begin with an epic 400km walking journey around the county: from Epping, via Harwich, to Tilbury. Along the way, James will gather stories of all kinds; from Essex residents, old books, and the many different landscapes he encounters. After the walk, he’ll weave these stories into some "modern Essex myths" and perform them across the county: sharing stories from the local area, highlighting local heritage and natural spaces, and inviting discussion around what it means to be from Essex. The stories will also be preserved for future generations in a book, a short film produced by fellow Essex boy Thomas Winward, and submissions to the Essex Sound & Video Archive.
This project is James’ love letter to Essex. His aim is to improve pride in the county, increase local access to natural spaces, give voice to those who might not otherwise be heard, and empower communities with the stories underpinning them. It’s a tall order - but like any self-respecting Essex person, he’s ready for the challenge!
