Sat 12 Jun - 18:00-19:00 - The first thing I did was to kiss the ground - conversation and cook along

Join artist Jasleen Kaur and members of the Gravesend’s Saheli Women's Group online, as they cook Aloo Paronthey in their own kitchens, and discuss questions of community, assimilation, resistance, and the importance of song and dance, and food.

If you have the ingredients below ready, you can join in and cook Aloo Paronthey alongside us, and informal instructions will be given over the course of the event.

Ingredients for Aloo Paronthey (Potato Bread)

5 boiled potatoes
Wheat Flour

For the Filling:
Fresh Methi (fenugreek)
Green Chillies
Coriander
Jeera Whole (cumin seeds)
Garam Masala
Salt
Fresh chopped onion
Ginger
Garlic
Ajwain (lovage seeds)
Crushed black pepper

Optional:
Fresh mint
Hing (asafoetida)
Amchoor (mango powder)
Turmeric

Note: if you can’t source some of the spices, just leave them out.

Jasleen’s work, The first thing I did was to kiss the ground, consists of a sculpture and sound work sited on Gravesend Town Pier and pontoon and is a co-commission with England’s Creative Coast – seven new site-specific artworks along the South East coast. The work will remain on display until 12 November 2021.
